HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to recognizing
3that our growth and strength depend on the safety and economic
4value of the homes, buildings, and infrastructure that serve
5our citizens, both in everyday life and in times of natural
6disaster; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Our confidence in the structural integrity of
8these buildings that make up our communities is achieved
9through the devotion of vigilant guardians, building safety and
10fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders,
11tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, and others in
12the construction industry who work year-round to ensure the
13safe construction of buildings; and
 
14    WHEREAS, These guardians are dedicated members of the
15International Code Council, a United States-based organization
16that brings together local, state, and federal officials who
17are experts in the built environment, to create and implement
18the highest-quality codes to protect us in the buildings where
19we live, learn, work, worship, and play; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Our nation benefits economically and
21technologically from the International Codes that are
22developed by national, voluntary consensus codes; with a

1standard-developing organization our government is able to
2avoid the high costs and complexity of developing and
3maintaining these codes, which are the most widely adopted
4building safety and fire prevention codes in the nation; these
5modern building codes include safeguards to protect the public
6from natural disasters such as hurricanes, snowstorms,
7tornadoes, fires and wildfires, floods, and earthquakes; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the
9International Code Council to remind the public about the
10critical role of the largely unknown guardians of community and
11public safety, the local code officials, who assure safe,
12efficient, and livable buildings which are essential to keeping
13America great; and
 
14    WHEREAS, "Code Officials-Partners in Community Safety and
15Economic Growth", is the theme for Building Safety Month 2017;
16it encourages all Americans to raise awareness of the
17importance of building safe and resilient construction, fire
18prevention, disaster mitigation, and new technologies in the
19construction industry; Building Safety Month 2017 encourages
20appropriate steps that everyone can take to ensure that the
21places where we live, learn, work, worship, and play are safe,
22and recognizes that countless lives have been saved due to the
23implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies; and

1    WHEREAS, Each year, in observance of Building Safety Month,
2Americans are asked to consider the commitment to improve
3building safety and economic investment at home and in the
4community, and to acknowledge the essential service provided to
5all of us by local and state building departments, fire
6prevention bureaus, and federal agencies in protecting lives
7and property; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10declare the month of May of 2017 as "Building Safety Month" in
11the State of Illinois and encourage our citizens to join with
12their communities in participation in Building Safety Month
13activities; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the International Code Council as an expression of
16our respect and esteem.
