HOUSE RESOLUTION

2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the students of Prairie
4Central High School for their cemetery mapping project; and

5    WHEREAS, Prairie Central High School Geography teacher
6Andrew Quain began the cemetery mapping project in the Fall of
72015; it was important to him to not only meet classroom
8education standards, but also participate in a project that had
9lasting power, something that his "students could work on and
10see the results" since geography is "all about collecting and
11using the data"; and

12    WHEREAS, The biggest recent addition to the project has
13been the use of GPS devices, which digitally plot the location
14of the gravestones; although it requires the students to spend
15a little bit more time at the cemetery, the devices have
16improved the speed and accuracy of the map-making process; and

17    WHEREAS, Students also perform geographic analysis and
18research individuals buried in the cemetery; a majority of the
19biographical information requires students to study the
20gravestones and take notes; additional information, including
21the date of birth, the date of death, military service where
22applicable, and any damage to the gravestone, is also

1collected; and

2    WHEREAS, Once students are finished collecting their data,
3the information is uploaded to create an interactive map
4online; when the map is complete, users will be able to search
5for the location and information of the graves in the cemetery;
6the map will be added to the cemetery project webpage on the
7Prairie Central website, and the geographic analysis will be
8stored in the school's library and made available upon request;
9and

10    WHEREAS, Currently, the geography students are mapping
11approximately 3,300 graves in Chenoa Cemetery, which they began
12at the end of April 2018; and

13    WHEREAS, To date, students have completely mapped seven
14cemeteries across McLean and Livingston Counties, including
15St. John Catholic Cemetery, Graceland Cemetery,
16Chatsworth-Charlotte Cemetery, Fairview Cemetery, Cropsey
17Cemetery, Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, and South Apostolic
18Christian Cemetery; therefore, be it

19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21recognize the students of Prairie Central High School for
22mapping more than 13,000 gravestones across eight cemeteries
