HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The week of January 29 through February 4, 2017
3was designated as National Catholic Schools Week by the United
4States House of Representatives to recognize the contribution
5of Catholic education to families and communities across the
6nation; and
 
7    WHEREAS, There are 570 Catholic private schools in the
8State of Illinois, serving 160,419 students statewide,
9including 83 High Schools, 438 Elementary Schools, and 322
10Preschools; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Catholic schools instill a broad, high-quality
12education for students, emphasizing the lifelong development
13of moral, intellectual, physical, and social values; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Catholic schools serve our communities by
15providing a diverse student population from all socio-economic
16backgrounds a strong academic and moral foundation; enrollment
17nationwide includes 20.3% racial minorities, 16.1%
18Hispanic/Latino, and 17.4% non-Catholic; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Catholic schools offer an affordable education
20option for parents, including those in underserved urban areas;

1    WHEREAS, The Catholic high school graduation rate
2nationwide is 99%, with 87% of graduates attending four-year
3colleges; and
 
4    WHEREAS, National Catholic Schools Week was first
5established in 1974 and has been celebrated on the national
6level annually for the past 43 years; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2017
8is "Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and
9Service"; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12declare the week of January 29 through February 4, 2017 as
13Catholic Schools Week in the State of Illinois; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That we support the continued dedication of
16Catholic schools, students, parents, and teachers throughout
17the state toward academic excellence, and a bright future for
18Illinois youth.
