HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and
3Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death
4in the United States; in 2014, more than 33,700 people died
5from motor vehicle crashes; for every death there are numerous
6devastating injuries and costly emergency room visits; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Drivers on the corridor of I-80 between the exit
8to I-55 in Joliet and the exit to Route 30 in New Lenox, suffer
9high rates of congestion; the corridor has witnessed a total of
10eight fatalities and 1,456 crashes since 2011; and
 
11    WHEREAS, These traffic accidents and the resulting
12injuries and deaths are tragedies for the families, the
13communities of the victims involved, and for the people of
14Illinois; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Transportation is
16administering a study of I-80 from Ridge Road to US Route 30 in
17preparation for the reconstruction of I-80 structures in that
18corridor; the reconstruction may not occur for several years;
19and
 
20    WHEREAS, Motorists would be safer and would take more
21precautions while driving if they had advanced knowledge of the

1congestion and dangers associated with the above-mentioned
2corridor along I-80; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE
5CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the Illinois Department of
6Transportation to erect signage notifying motorists of
7congestion and possible dangers along Interstate 80 between the
8exit to I-55 in Joliet and Route 30 in New Lenox; and be it
9further
 
10    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11delivered to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation
12and the Mayor of the City of Joliet.
