SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Zealy Maurice Holmes, who passed away on September 5, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was born on the family farmstead just outside Edelstein on December 8, 1922; his parents were Charles and Edna (nee Schielein) Holmes; he married Ruth Streitmatter at home on June 29, 1944; and

WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes served as a first lieutenant with the 89th Infantry Division in the European Theater during World War II; he was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for his service; despite his distinguished service in the war, the veteran dreamed of and worked toward a world of peaceful nations cooperating to solve problems; and

WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was an active church and community leader; he helped design and shape Illinois Central College through his service as president of the founding board; he and his wife were also instrumental in forming the Peoria Area World Affairs Council in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; and

WHEREAS, Zealy Holmes is survived by 3 daughters, Connie Holmes Nelson, Peggy Holmes (Jim Hicks), and Wendy Holmes (David Frank); 3 granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of Zealy Maurice Holmes; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Zealy Holmes as an expression of our sympathy.
