SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Janice Marilyn Miller Hartman, who passed away on May 26, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Janice Hartman was born on May 2, 1937 to Andrew and Mercedes Miller; she grew up in Matherville and graduated third in her class from Sherrard High School in 1955; and

WHEREAS, Janice Hartman returned to school after starting her family; she attended Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, graduating in June of 1972 with an associate degree in science; she graduated from Sangamon State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology a year later; she worked for a year at the Springfield Mental Health Center and then moved to Champaign, where she earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Illinois in January of 1976; after graduation, she remained to work for the University of Illinois, where she taught, administered the undergraduate program, and served as an assistant and associate dean for the School of Social Work for many years; and

WHEREAS, Janice Hartman was an avid fan of Illini sports and attended many events over the years; one of her shining moments was when she was able to be an "assistant coach" for Lou Henson; she was a founding member of the Crisis Nursery of Champaign, serving as president in 1986; she was also a founding member of Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children; and

WHEREAS, After retiring, Janice Hartman, and her husband, Chuck, moved to Columbia, Missouri for a time; she continued her volunteer work in different capacities, in between traveling to see family and trips around the world, eventually returning to Urbana; and

WHEREAS, Janice Hartman is survived by her husband, Charles Cowger; her 6 children from her marriage to Willis D. Hartman, Jr., Lisa (Aaron) Sedig, Lori (Jim) Petry, Mark Hartman, Mitch (Hope) Hartman, Leslie (Kevin) Rutland, and Kris (Dean) Edwardson; her grandchildren, Logan and Caleb Sedig, Adam, Ben, and Grace Petry, Laurel Hartman, Aubrey (Logan) Rogers, Kyle Rutland, Mitchell (Katherine) Hartman, Laura, Mathew, Michael, and Maddux Hartman,Erika Mueller, and Nikolaus Edwardson; her great-grandchildren, Ryker Johnson and Hudson Rogers; her sisters, Marlene Carlson and Diane Nagovan; and many friends and extended family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Janice Marilyn Miller Hartman, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Janice Hartman as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
