SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Beatrice Matthews; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was born in Chicago on May 29, 1926 to Horace Calbert and Edna Brooks; she attended Wendell Phillips elementary and high schools and earned her cosmetology license from Unique Beauty School; she married Ned Matthews in 1946; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews worked at Hazel's and later for the United States Postal Service as a mail handler until retirement; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was a member of Christ Universal Temple, where she obtained a Master Certificate from the Johnnie Coleman Institute; she volunteered for service in the 24-hour Prayer Ministry and served as the first President of the Ambassadors of Love Club; she was a member of the South Side branch of the N.A.A.C.P. Women's Auxiliary; she enjoyed traveling around the world; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ned; her daughter, Bridget Matthews; her sibling, Gale Wilkins; and her grandchildren, Dino and Nicola; and

WHEREAS, Beatrice Matthews is survived by her children, Christel Davis and Cordell Matthews; her 5 siblings, Hazel Garner-Brooks, Donald Clark (Cheryl), LaVonne Curington (Harold), and Joyce Calbert; her grandchildren, Lavite, Eddie, Cordell (Boo), Jeremy, and Andiana; her 7 great-grandchildren, D'Angelo, Kadoshia, Rickey, Christel, Dominique, Johnette, and Lil John; her 9 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of Beatrice Matthews, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Beatrice Matthews as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
