SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Gretta Viola (Spivey) Whitted, a lifelong resident of Joliet, who passed away on November 22, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted was born in Joliet to Willie and Ruby Spivey on September 16, 1937; she was educated in the Joliet Public Schools and, upon high school graduation, attended The Art Institute of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted worked at APSA and then the City of Joliet, from where she retired; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted was a founder of the Joliet Chapter of National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted was a well-versed traveler, painter, photographer, and gardener; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted was preceded in death by her grandparents, Odie and Sally Mitchell, and Rev. J.P. and Minnie Spivey; her parents, Willie and Ruby Spivey; her aunts, Viola Hatten, and Sadie Spivey; her uncles, Warren Mitchell, J.C. Mitchell, and Rhea Spivey; and her cousins, Raymond Spivey, Jesse Cecil Mitchell, Eddie Dorris, Judy Roberts, Debra Ray, and Jeffery Stevens; and

WHEREAS, Gretta Whitted is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Curtis Whitted; her only child, Robin Michelle Whitted; her brother, William "Billy" (Shirley) Spivey; her sisters, Jacqueline "Jackie" (Clarence Jr.) Westbrooks, and Marie Spivey; her brother and sisters-in-law, James Whitted, Barbara Williams, and Betty Callett; her godchildren, Tara R. Spivey, and Brandon Stevens; her aunt, Belle Mitchell; her cousins, Ara Jean Sams, Francine Stevens, Donald Dennison, Michael Dennison, Diane Thomas, Larry Spivey, Brian Spivey, Beatrice Spivey, and Lynette Spivey; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of Gretta Viola Whitted, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Gretta Whitted as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
