SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Granite City Works steel mill has operated
3since 1878; it was originally founded by brothers, William and
4Frederick Niedringhaus, as the Granite Iron Rolling Mills, and
5most recently, owned by United States Steel Corporation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Granite City Works has been an industry leader
7in sheet steel products for customers in the construction,
8container, piping and tubing, service center, and automotive
9industries; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Granite City Works has an annual raw steelmaking
11capability of 2.8 million net tons; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Global influences in the market such as reduced
13steel prices, unfair trade practices, imports, and fluctuating
14oil prices, continue to have a dramatic negative impact on the
15steel production industry; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Domestic steelmakers continue to lose substantial
17sales to foreign countries, particularly China and South Korea,
18which have "dumped" their steel products into the United States
19market at prices below fair market value; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Operations at Granite City Works were suspended in

1early 2016, with over 1,600 people losing their jobs; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The chief executive officer of U.S. Steel has said
3the company does not have a timeline to restart production at
4the Metro-East plant; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Granite City Works is a vital part of the
6Metro-East economy, and the suspension of the operations of the
7mill is devastating to thousands of families and the financial
8well-being of the entire region; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the President
11of the United States and Congress to only use American made
12steel in any national infrastructure plan that may be signed
13into law; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That we urge the President of the United States
15and Congress to consider all possible trade and economic
16policies to protect this vital American industry and minimize
17the financial impact on these hardworking men and women; and be
18it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20delivered to the President and Vice-President of the United
21States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States
