SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mary Ann MacLean, who passed away on
4August 18, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mary Ann MacLean was born in October of 1942 in
6Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in Hinsdale; after
7graduating from Hinsdale Central High School, she studied for a
8time at colleges in Pennsylvania and in Lausanne, Switzerland;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mary Ann MacLean was an assistant to a trader at
11Merrill Lynch, where she met her future husband, Barry; she
12became vocal at local school board meetings when her children
13were little, seeking to expand foreign language education in
14early grades; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Mary Ann MacLean served on the Illinois State
16Museum board for 32 years and served as director; in 2011, the
17Mary Ann MacLean Play Museum, which teaches children to learn
18through play what it is like to work at a museum, opened at the
19Illinois State Museum site in Springfield; she served on the
20Illinois State Board of Education and as a trustee at the
21Chicago Zoological Society, the Chicago Botanic Garden, the
22MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of

1Chicago Medicine, the Rassias Center at Dartmouth College, and
2at Union College; she also supported education and outreach
3activities at Brookfield Zoo; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In 2013, the Chicago Zoological Society, which
5manages Brookfield Zoo, dedicated its new home for education,
6conservation, and outreach efforts as the Mary Ann MacLean
7Conservation Leadership Center; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Mary Ann MacLean is survived by her husband,
9Barry; her children, Adrian Jay, Gillian Growdon, and Duncan
10MacLean; her stepdaughters, Elizabeth Larned and Margaret
11MacLean; her sister, Libby Lucas; and 12 grandchildren;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
15family and friends, mourn the passing of Mary Ann MacLean; and
16be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Mary Ann MacLean as an expression of
19our sympathy.
