SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Karen (nee Campe) Mateyka of
4Edwardsville, who passed away on February 18, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was born in Lebanon on August 4,
61937 to Harold and Arline (nee Neumann) Campe; she was raised
7in Lebanon, where she was an honor student and graduate of
8Lebanon High School; she was awarded a scholastic scholarship
9to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where she was a
10cheerleader and member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Society; after
11moving to Edwardsville, she completed a Bachelor of Science in
12History and Art History at Southern Illinois
13University-Edwardsville; she married William J. "Bill" Mateyka
14on November 22, 1957 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
15Edwardsville; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka became an active member and served
17in leadership roles in various Edwardsville organizations,
18including Junior Service and the YMCA; since 1992, she has been
19a member of the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission
20and served as Chairman of the organization; in September of
212000, she received a Local Preservation Award from the Illinois
22Association of Historic Preservation Commissions; she
23researched and wrote 5 local landmark applications, a landmark

1brochure, and coordinated the publication of "Edwardsville: An
2Illustrated History"; she assisted with the development of the
3Archi-Room at the Edwardsville Public Library and with the
4organization of the Route 66 Festival; she spearheaded the
5effort to rehang the old bank clock, which resulted in Clock
6Tower Park on Main Street; she chaired the brick street
7restoration project and was instrumental in the city's purchase
8of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was named a Paul Harris Fellow by
10the Edwardsville Rotary Club for her work in preservation and
11was appointed to the Illinois Historic Advisory Council in
12November of 2000; she was a board member of the Friends of Col.
13Benjamin Stephenson House; her dedication to the Stephenson
14House is noted by her research of the complete genealogy of the
15Stephenson family; in April of 2007, she published the book
16"Henry the Stephenson House Mouse: A Diary", detailing the
17restoration of Col. Benjamin Stephenson's house and the history
18of the Stephenson family; in May of 2012, she received the
19Historic Preservation Recognition Award from the National
20Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for her
21excellent volunteer work in historic preservation; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was was a member of St. Boniface
23Catholic Church in Edwardsville; and

1    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was preceded in death by her parents
2and her daughter, Jeanne Mateyka; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka is survived by her son, Dan (Denise)
4Mateyka; her daughter, Sarah L. "Sally" Mateyka; her
5granddaughter, Taylor Danielle Mateyka; and her sister, Dona
6(John) Shieppe; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Karen Mateyka, and extend our sincere condolences to her
10family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Karen Mateyka as an expression of
14our deepest sympathy.
