SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Artha L. Chamberlain of Urbana, who
4passed away on February 18, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was born to Frank and Emma Kuoni
6Littel on August 20, 1918; she was raised in the river town of
7Sauk City, Wisconsin, where she learned to swim from regional
8author August Derleth and spent afternoons with her older
9sister, Dorothy, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lloyd Wright, enjoying
10foreign films and cookies at Taliesin; she was a soda jerk in
11the local drugstore, where she once served hamburgers to Cab
12Calloway and his band; she received her Bachelor of Arts from
13the University of Wisconsin-Madison and enlisted in the WAVES
14shortly after World War II began; she was stationed in
15Washington, D.C. and worked in Naval Intelligence until the end
16of the war; she married Don Chamberlain in 1945 and they moved
17to Urbana, where she received her Master of Arts from the
18University of Illinois; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain spent most of her career in the
20Department of Aero and Astro Engineering as the undergraduate
21writing program director, publications counselor, and alumni
22liaison; and

1    WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was an avid sports fan,
2including golf, football, and basketball; she was a loyal
3Illini fan, but her first loyalty was to her University of
4Wisconsin Badgers, as evidenced by that red Wisconsin baseball
5cap and Badger earmuffs she wore everywhere; she was active in
6the community and at St. Patrick's Church; she was an Ebertfest
7groupie from its inception and shared many Ebertfests with her
8daughters and friends; she and her husband shared many
9interests, including Krannert performances, Stardusters
10dances, U of I football games, and traveling; she was a
11talented and prolific writer and was probably best known for
12her well-loved, annual Christmas letter; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain was preceded in death by her
14husband of 52 years, Don, and her sisters, Dorothy Mueller and
15Pauline Nickel; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Artha Chamberlain is survived by her children,
17Frank Chamberlain, Ellen (Charlie) Warmbrunn, and Beth (Bill)
18Welbes; her 3 grandchildren, Matt Call, Sam Call, and Jacob
19Welbes; her nephews, John Nickel and David LeResche; her
20nieces, Kathy Englander and Mary Nell Marten; and many
21wonderful great-nieces and great-nephews; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
23ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Artha L. Chamberlain, and extend our sincere condolences to her
2family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Artha Chamberlain as an expression
6of our deepest sympathy.
