| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Smith of Canton, | 4 | | who passed away on January 18, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith was born in Canton to Lorenzo and | 6 | | Theresa (nee Rubeo) Bertetto on January 27, 1926; she graduated | 7 | | from Canton High School in 1944 and married Dale Robert Smith | 8 | | in Lewistown on November 16, 1945; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith was active in politics; she could | 10 | | often be found hitting the campaign trail in support of her | 11 | | beloved son and former Illinois State Representative, Mike | 12 | | Smith; she served on the Board of Directors of the Canton YWCA | 13 | | and was a member of the Fulton County League of Democratic | 14 | | Women, serving in various capacities, including President; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith was a dedicated member of the | 16 | | Graham Hospital Service League, where she was recognized for | 17 | | her work as Chairwoman of the committee responsible for making | 18 | | puppets to distribute to the children admitted to the hospital; | 19 | | and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith had a passion for collecting; her | 21 | | collection of salt and pepper shakers is one of the largest in |

| 1 | | the area with over 10,000 pairs; she also collected several | 2 | | hundred cookie jars and Fiestaware in all of the colors of the | 3 | | rainbow; one of her most prized possessions was a pair of salt | 4 | | and pepper shakers given to her by President Barack Obama; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith was preceded in death by her | 6 | | husband, Dale Smith; her son, State Representative Michael | 7 | | Smith; her parents; her 2 sisters, Margret Walker and Dominca | 8 | | Lancaster; and her 5 brothers, Joseph Bertetto, Dominic | 9 | | Bertetto, Peter Bertetto, Charles Bertetto, and John Bertetto; | 10 | | and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Elizabeth Smith is survived by her children, | 12 | | Sandra (Leon) Schuman and Patricia Fowler; her | 13 | | daughter-in-law, Donna Smith; her sister-in-law, Harriett | 14 | | Bertetto; her 4 grandchildren, Greg Schuman, Amy Tiff, Angela | 15 | | (Tim) Burke, and Natalie Fowler; her 5 great-grandchildren; and | 16 | | her great-great-grandchild; therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 19 | | Elizabeth Marie "Betty" Smith, and extend our sincere | 20 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 21 | | her; and be it further
