SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Janet Cornelius, who passed away on
4September 19, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius was born on January 20, 1938 in
6Danville; her parents were Heye J. and Mary Ellen (nee Michael)
7Duitsman; she married Eldred J. Cornelius on June 10, 1956 in
8Royal; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius attended Ogden High School and
10earned her bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Ph.D. from
11the University of Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius taught history and served as an
13administrator at Danville Area Community College, where she was
14named Faculty of the Year in 1996; she also taught at the
15University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University, and the
16University of St. Francis; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius was the author of four books on
18Illinois Constitutions, literacy, slavery and religion, and
19women in Danville, as well as numerous book reviews and
20articles in historical journals; and

1    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius served on the Illinois Archives
2Board and the Illinois Historical Society Board and served as
3president of the Danville branch of the American Association of
4University Women; she was also a member of St. John Lutheran
5Church in Royal, where she served on the church council and the
6synod's Global Mission Committee as world hunger coordinator;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius enjoyed the farm, traveling, and
9reading; she loved music passionately, becoming a regular
10patron of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and the Lyric
11Opera of Chicago and singing for many in the Oratorio Society
12at the University of Illinois; she traveled to Canada for its
13annual Shakespeare festival and promoted the arts wherever she
14could; she and her husband also enjoyed a home in Venice,
15Florida in their retirement years, where they became avid Tampa
16Bay Rays baseball fans, and walking on the beach; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Janet Cornelius is survived by her brother, John
18(Monika) Duitsman; her daughters, Kristin (Michael) Camp and
19Valerie (Larry) Viverito; her sons, Eric Cornelius and Kent
20(Mickey) Cornelius; her 9 grandchildren; and her 9
21great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
23ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her

1family and friends, mourn the passing of Janet Cornelius; and
2be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Janet Cornelius as an expression of
5our sympathy.
