SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to individuals who gave their
4lives in the line of duty; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Illinois State Trooper Bernard Delano "Bernie"
6Skeeters's last watch occurred on May 20, 1982 when his patrol
7car was struck from behind by a tractor trailer on Interstate
855 near Williamsville; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Trooper Skeeters was working a safety detail
10patrolling on southbound Interstate 55 behind a paint truck
11when a semi-trailer slammed into his squad car from behind
12forcing his car into the paint truck in front of him; the
133-vehicle accident instantly killed Trooper Skeeters; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Trooper Skeeters became an Illinois State Troper
15on March 9, 1970 and served for 12 years; he was assigned to
16District 9 in Springfield; he was the youngest of 15 children
17to Joseph Edward and Grace Rosalie (nee Whitcomb) Skeeters; he
18was survived by his wife, Marie, and their 3 sons, Tom, Ron,
19and the late Andy; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

1CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the Stuttle Road overpass
2over Interstate 55 in Williamsville as the "Trooper Bernard D.
3Skeeters Memorial Overpass"; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
5is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
6State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
7giving notice of the name "Trooper Bernard D. Skeeters Memorial
8Overpass"; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Trooper Skeeters and the Secretary
11of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
