SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Illinoisans are increasingly using new technology, including smart phones, in their daily lives for such core, day-to-day functions like working, banking, and shopping; and

WHEREAS, Increasing convenience is one way to improve the quality of life for our residents and citizens; and

WHEREAS, There is both a financial and an environmental cost for producing plastic driver's licenses; and

WHEREAS, There is an emergent technology that allows for secure digital driver's licenses; and

WHEREAS, The States of Iowa and Delaware are planning to experiment with digital licenses in 2015; and

WHEREAS, The digital driver's license would be optional and not required; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the Secretary of State to study and consider the issuance of optional digital driver's licenses for Illinois motorists; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Secretary of State.
