HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 100th anniversary of the Phillips Park Zoo in Aurora; and

WHEREAS, The Phillips Park Zoo opened in 1915 and originally housed exotic animals; since then, the mission has changed to bring people in contact with animals native to North America - from cougars, elks, and wolves to alligators, eagles, and otters; and

WHEREAS, The Phillips Park Zoo has over 80 animals of over 40 different species; it entertains over 200,000 visitors per year and has no entrance fee; and

WHEREAS, Although there is a limited amount of land at the Phillips Park Zoo, the animals are provided ample exhibit space, preferring to house fewer animals comfortably instead of trying to house more animals in smaller exhibits; and

WHEREAS, In addition to housing animals, the Phillips Park Zoo is also home to many rescue animals; many of the rescue animals have permanent disabilities that prevent them from ever being released back into the wild; and

WHEREAS, The Phillips Park Zoo continues to add new animals through the rescue and breeding programs it participates in; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the Phillips Park Zoo on its 100th anniversary and we wish it many more successful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Phillips Park Zoo as an expression of our esteem and respect.
