HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Maness; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness served his country as a 20-year member of the United States Army Rangers, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class and serving in combat during the first Gulf War; and

WHEREAS, Upon retiring from the Army, Deputy Maness was driven to continue protecting his community as a deputy in the McHenry County Sheriff's Department, where he served as a field training officer, a member of the SWAT team, and a first aid instructor; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness embodied the courage and selflessness of those who protect and serve our communities; responding to a report of a domestic incident in Holiday Hills, he was ambushed and shot 3 times in the back and leg by the suspect with a high-powered assault rifle; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness' heroism in the line of duty was recognized when he received a Purple Heart medal from the sheriff's department; and

WHEREAS, Despite severe injuries, Deputy Maness continued working to foster kinship within the local law enforcement community; although confined to a wheel chair, he spent his final birthday attending a vigil for fallen Fox Lake Police Lieutenant Joseph Gliniewicz; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness worked hard to overcome the severe injuries sustained in the attack in hopes of returning to active duty, but he passed too soon at the age of 47; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness will be remembered by the community he loved as one of the true heroes who walk among us; and

WHEREAS, Deputy Maness is survived by his wife Sue, with whom he would have celebrated 5 years of marriage this September; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Maness, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Deputy Maness as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
