HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Village of New Berlin on the occasion of the Village's 150th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The first settlement in the area was laid out in 1838 by German immigrants; the Village of New Berlin became incorporated in 1865 as an agricultural community in Sangamon County; and

WHEREAS, On November 17, 1956, a fire destroyed several businesses in New Berlin, which were forced to rebuild; and

WHEREAS, According to United States Census data, New Berlin had a population of 1,346 in 2010, an increase of 30.7% since 2000; and

WHEREAS, New Berlin is home to Community Unit School District 16, which includes New Berlin Elementary School, New Berlin Middle School, and New Berlin High School, all of which have the Pretzel as their mascot; and

WHEREAS, The Village of New Berlin is home to the Sangamon County Fair, which attracts fairgoers from around central Illinois to enjoy music and festivities during the month of June; and

WHEREAS, To commemorate its 150th anniversary, activities will take place throughout the year, culminating on the weekend of October 3, 2015; and

WHEREAS, As part of the celebration, a "Sesquicentennial History Book" is being developed that will chronicle significant events that have occurred in the area; the book will include sections for families, businesses, farms, churches, and civic organizations, with the goal of building an accurate and comprehensive book of the history of the New Berlin area; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Village of New Berlin on the occasion of its sesquicentennial anniversary, wish the Village tremendous success on its sesquicentennial celebration, and wish the Village's residents success and prosperity in the years to come; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Village President of New Berlin as a symbol of our admiration and respect on the occasion of New Berlin's 150th anniversary celebration.
