HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mike "Tuna" McElroy, who passed away on July 17, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy served as mayor of the City of Decatur since 2009 and had been a member of the City Council since 2003; he was also vice president of the Skeff Distributing Company and a graduate of St. Teresa High School; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy devoted much of his life to public service; he was a member of the St. Teresa Development Board of Directors, the YMCA Board of Directors, the SummerStart Festival Board of Directors, the Danville Convention and Tourism Board, and the Association of Beer Distributors of Illinois Board of Directors; he also held several leadership positions with the Jaycees; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he joined Decatur residents in a show of solidarity against protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church in 2014; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is remembered for his friendliness, optimism, and passion for his community; he was a devoted public servant who cared deeply about the City of Decatur and took great pride in developments, such as downtown streetscape enhancements and the opening of a new police station; above all, he saw a bright future for the city and worked endlessly to move it forward; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Betty McElroy; his in-laws, Jim and Ginny Tuttle; and a sister, Anne McElroy; and

WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lynn; a son, Matt (Christina); 3 siblings, Pat, Tim (Leslie), and Ellen; a brother-in-law, Lee Tuttle; his nieces and nephews, Hilary and Colin Runion, Conor, Brennan, and Dixie McElroy, Byrnes Kenworth, Colleen (Jarid) Thompson; a great-niece, Remi; Hayden Athey; and Greg (Annie) and Maggie Tuttle; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mike McElroy and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, the residents of Decatur, and all who knew him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mike McElroy as an expression of our greatest sympathy and respect.
