HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of James Kenneth Powless, who passed away on April 18, 2015; and

WHEREAS, James Powless was born in Carbondale on April 9, 1949 to Kenneth Barnett and Emily Mary (nee Cygnar) Powless; he married Susan Elizabeth Reed on June 13, 1970 in Marion; he earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance in 1971 and a Juris Doctor in 1974 from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, James Powless practiced law in Marion and owned William County Title and Abstract; and

WHEREAS, James Powless was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Marion; he enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking, tinkering, teaching, and listening to folk music; he volunteered for the Marion Regional Humane Society and substitute taught for the Marion and Carterville school districts; he invested many years coaching a summer softball league; and

WHEREAS, James Powless was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, George Pullis; and

WHEREAS, James Powless is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan; his 2 daughters and son-in-law, Sarah Filkins and Jamie and Will Miller; his 3 grandsons, Colin Filkins, Jack Miller, and Finnegan Miller; his sisters, Linda Powless and Catherine Powless; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Patty Powless; his mother-in-law, Carol Pullis; several nephews and nieces; many friends; and the many students whom he enjoyed teaching in the Marion Unit 2 and Carterville Unit 5 school districts; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of James Kenneth Powless, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of James Powless as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
