HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to honor Julie E. Hamos, former Director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (DHFS), on her distinguished career in public service; and

WHEREAS, In April of 2010, Director Hamos was appointed to oversee DHFS, a $19.5 billion State agency responsible for providing healthcare coverage for adults and children and for providing child support services; she oversaw the expansion of managed medical care and the expansion of healthcare coverage under President Obama's Affordable Care Act; and

WHEREAS, From 1999 to 2010, Director Hamos served as State Representative of the 18th District; during her tenure in the General Assembly, she spearheaded legislation on numerous issues, including healthcare, agriculture, housing, telecommunications, mass transit, and aviation; and

WHEREAS, Director Hamos served as President of Julie E. Hamos & Associates from 1988 to 2007; she was Director of the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, Child Support Division from 1985 to 1988; Legislative Counsel for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office from 1981 to 1985; Director of Legislation and Political Action for the American Federation of State, County, & Municipal Employees from 1979 to 1980; Legislative Attorney for the Legislative Support Center in Springfield from 1976 to 1979; and Staff Attorney for the United States House Ways and Means Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight in Washington, D.C. from 1975 to 1976; and

WHEREAS, Director Hamos was named a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government for Senior Executives in State and Local Government in 2004; she has been named a "top legislator" by more than 50 organizations and was one of "25 Women to Watch" in Crain's Chicago Business in 2007; she has received numerous awards, recognitions, and honors throughout her career; and

WHEREAS, Director Hamos received her Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in June of 1972, and her Juris Doctor from The National Law Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in June of 1975; she is a licensed attorney in Ohio and Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor Julie E. Hamos, former Director of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, on her distinguished career in public service and wish her the best in all her future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Director Hamos as an expression of our esteem and respect.
