HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition of
3pregnancy that can, in its most severe form, lead to maternal
4and infant mortality or premature birth with significant health
5risks for the mother and baby; and
 
6    WHEREAS, More than 350,000 cases of preeclampsia are
7diagnosed in America every year; 25% of the cases are
8classified as severe; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In America, a pregnant woman and her baby face
10life-threatening consequences due to preeclampsia every 6
11minutes; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Globally, preeclampsia and other hypertensive
13disorders of pregnancy are leading causes of maternal and
14infant illness and death; conservative estimates claim that
15these disorders are responsible for 76,000 maternal and 500,000
16infant deaths each year; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Public awareness of the symptoms of preeclampsia,
18which include spikes in maternal blood pressure, sudden
19swelling of the face, feet, and hands, severe upper abdominal
20pain, and blurred vision, can help women recognize the
21condition and seek appropriate medical care; and

1    WHEREAS, Many citizens of Illinois have joined with the
2Preeclampsia Foundation to raise public awareness in order to
3minimize maternal and infant illness and death due to
4preeclampsia; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The members of this body join the Preeclampsia
6Foundation in envisioning a world where preeclampsia no longer
7threatens the lives of mothers and babies; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
10designate May 17, 2015 as Preeclampsia Awareness Day in the
11State of Illinois and applaud the Preeclampsia Foundation's
12mission to reduce maternal and infant illness and death due to
13preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy;
14and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the Preeclampsia Foundation as a symbol of our
17respect and esteem for its work.
