HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the trustees,
4administration, and staff of Lincoln Park Zoo on the occasion
5of the grand opening of the Regenstein Macaque Forest and thank
6them for their work in their community; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Regenstein Macaque Forest is home to 5 female
8and 3 male snow monkeys which came to Lincoln Park Zoo from the
9Japan Monkey Centre, an accredited zoo in Inuyama, Japan, where
10they have resided for the past several years; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Snow monkeys are native to Japan and are known for
12their tolerance for extreme climates from sub-tropical
13lowlands to sub-alpine regions; some populations of Japanese
14macaques have been observed cleaning their food before
15consumption by rinsing it off in nearby water sources; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Beginning April 2, 2015, zoo visitors will have
17daily opportunities to not only catch a glimpse of these unique
18primates, but also engage in hands-on learning opportunities
19and witness behavioral scientists working to acclimate the
20monkeys to a research booth; scientists from the Lester E.
21Fisher Center for the Study & Conservation of Apes are engaged
22in a broad behavioral and cognitive research program that

1includes the opportunity for snow monkeys to operate touch
2screen computers, making it the most in-depth zoo-based
3research program for this species in the world; these studies
4will help scientists understand more about how the monkeys
5think, learn, and feel, and provide valuable mental activity
6for the monkeys themselves; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The administration and staff of the Lincoln Park
8Zoo serve as models of hard work, integrity and dedication for
9the people of the State of Illinois and have created a new
10standard for conservation efforts in the State of Illinois and
11the world at large; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14congratulate the trustees, administration, and staff of
15Lincoln Park Zoo on the occasion of the opening of the zoo's
16Regenstein Macaque Forest, thank them for the wonderful work
17they have performed in their community, and wish them continued
18success and happiness in the future; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the Lincoln Park Zoo as a symbol of our esteem and
21respect.
