HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 100th anniversary of the
4founding of the Lincoln Place neighborhood in Granite City; and
 
5    WHEREAS, During the early 1900s, the Granite City area
6became the center of the graniteware industry; the opportunity
7for work attracted immigrants to the area from all over the
8world; these immigrants settled in the undeveloped area west of
9town, which was soon known as "Hungary Hollow" after the many
10Hungarian immigrants who settled the area; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In 1916, community leaders decided to rename the
12area with a name that more appropriately represented the
13aspirations of immigrants; "Lincoln Place" was chosen in honor
14of Abraham Lincoln, who had risen from humble beginnings and
15had achieved greatness, something which the immigrants within
16the community aspired to do; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Since its beginning, Lincoln Place welcomed
18immigrants from all over the world; with their arrival, they
19brought their culture while embracing all that being an
20American had to offer; and
 
21    WHEREAS, The stories of the immigrants who came to Lincoln

1Place is the story of Lincoln Place; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The culture and heritage of Lincoln Place is
3preserved by the Lincoln Place Heritage Association, whose
4mission is to encourage, facilitate, and implement
5preservation of the history and cultural heritage of the
6historic Lincoln Place neighborhood; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9recognize the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Place
10neighborhood in Granite City, and we wish them many more
11wonderful years; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to Lincoln Place Heritage Association President
14Norma Asadorian.
