HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, November 11, 2016 is the 90th anniversary of the
3official designation of Route 66; and
 
4    WHEREAS, For many decades, Route 66 was the major highway
5across the United States and through the State of Illinois; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Illinois had a major impact on Route 66; the route
7begins in Chicago and Illinois was the first state to have the
8route paved across an entire state; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Illinois Route 66's journey runs almost a 300-mile
10stretch through numerous towns, eventually arriving in
11Missouri before continuing on its way to Santa Monica,
12California; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Since 1989, the Route 66 Association of Illinois
14has been working to preserve and promote Route 66 in Illinois;
15the group also established the Route 66 Association Hall of
16Fame; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Illinois' section of Route 66 was decommissioned
18in 1977, but the Prairie State's portion of the Mother Road
19endures; although the road is often under new designations, all
20but about 13 miles of the final alignment remains traversable;

2    WHEREAS, In 2005, the Illinois stretch of Route 66 received
3National Scenic Byway status; the National Park Service Route
466 Corridor Preservation Program has awarded more than 23
5cost-share grants to assist properties in Illinois; therefore,
6be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9celebrate the 90th anniversary of this famed highway and invite
10the citizens of this State to join in celebrating this landmark
11year; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the Route 66 Association of Illinois and the
14Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway.
