HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Pastor Joseph B. Gordon on
4the occasion of his 20th anniversary in the ministry; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon is a native of Detroit,
6Michigan; he accepted his call to ministry at the age of 15; he
7earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and
8Communications from the University of Michigan and a Masters of
9Divinity from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary at
10Northwestern University in Evanston; he continued his studies
11at the Institute of Church Administration and Management at the
12Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; he
13also has an earned Doctor of Ministry degree in Prophetic
14Preaching and Congregational Leadership from United
15Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Prior to his service at Carter Temple, Pastor
17Joseph Gordon served as senior pastor in four assignments in
18Illinois and Michigan; through his leadership, there were
19increases in stewardship, membership, and community
20involvement; his passions are preaching, teaching and working
21with civic and community leaders, health care issues, and other
22concerns directly related to the African American experience
23and the urban church; and

1    WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon has been invited to serve as
2a preacher, teacher, and revivalist across the United States
3and was an inaugural presenter at the Styberg Preaching
4Institute; he received the Styberg Award for excellence in
5homiletics and the 2011 Outstanding Minister Award from the
6Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational
7Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia; he is also a three-time
8recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Pastor Joseph Gordon served as a member of the
10advisory board for Brothers and Sisters United against HIV/AIDS
11in Illinois; he is the current Chairman of the Joint Board of
12Finance of the Southeast Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin
13Region and held the same position in the Michigan-Indiana
14Region; he served on the Board of Directors for the Storehouse
15of Hope, a church and non-profit collaborative in Detroit's
16Northend neighborhood; he has been a public relations aide for
17Congressman John Conyers, Jr., a community-faith liaison the
18NAACP, an appointed member of Mayor Dave Bing's Detroit
19Community Faith Initiative, a delegate to the General
20Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the
21Conference of National Black Churches, a founding member of the
22Black Methodist Alliance of Detroit, president of the Detroit
23District Ministerial Alliance, and a member of the
24Pan-Methodist Commission; he currently serves on the National

1Council of Churches, where he is a member of the
2Intergenerational Think Tank; during his pastorate at St.
3John's in Detroit, the Black Methodist Alliance held the first
4annual BMA "One in the Spirit Revival" at St. John's Church,
5the first of its kind in the nation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The congregation of Carter Temple will celebrate
7Pastor Joseph Gordon's 20th anniversary in the ministry with a
8Pastor's Appreciation and U.N.I.T.Y. Celebration on August 13
9and 14, 2016 at the Martinique Banquet Complex Grand Ballroom
10in Burbank; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13congratulate Pastor Joseph B. Gordon on the occasion of his
1420th anniversary in the ministry and wish him continued success
15and happiness in the future; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Pastor Joseph Gordon as a symbol of our esteem and
18respect.
