HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to honor Derrick Nathan Burgess for his many years of public service on behalf of the citizens of Sauk Village; and

WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess moved to Sauk Village in 1982; he and his loving wife, Juanita, have been married for over 42 years and have four children, Derrick, Arleta, Steven, and Erika; and

WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess has been involved in his community and hometown of Sauk Village in many capacities; he served as Vice President of the St. James Catholic School Board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Finance Committee for the School in Sauk Village; he was a founding member of the Deer Creek Homeowners Association and helped form the Men's Club in Sauk Village; he also served the children of Sauk Village by serving as a volunteer for the Sauk Village Parks and Recreation Committee and served as a Commissioner for the Sauk Village Zoning Board of Appeals; and

WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess was appointed to the unexpired term of Sauk Village Village Trustee Rita Kueny by former Mayor Roger G. Peckham on June 13, 2006; his appointment made him the first African-American man to serve as a Village Trustee in the 49-year history of the Village; he was re-elected to his position in 2007, 2011, and 2015; he was re-elected to a historic third consecutive term as Village Trustee in April of 2015, a feat which has only been matched by a select few in Sauk Village; and

WHEREAS, From 2006 to 2009, Derrick Burgess served as chairman of the Sauk Village Parks and Recreation Committee, where the Village enjoyed many time-honored traditions and programs for the youth of Sauk Village; he served as Treasurer of the Sauk Village Fiftieth Anniversary Committee in 2007; he served as Chairman of the Sauk Village Economic Development Committee from 2009 to 2013, during which time the Village was successful in securing Winpak at the Sauk Village LogistiCenter; he served as Chairman of the first Sauk Village Intergovernmental Relations Committee from 2013 to 2015, leading off a new venture to bring about intergovernmental cooperation; he also began a monthly Town Hall Meeting for the residents of the Village in June of 2013; and

WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess will be honored with a celebration of his many achievements at an event at the Trustee Burgess Town Hall Meeting on June 15, 2016; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor Derrick Nathan Burgess for his many years of public service on behalf of the citizens of Sauk Village and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Derrick Burgess as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
