HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, On April 11, 2016, the Gallatin County High School Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Team competed in and won the State championship at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign; and

WHEREAS, The Academic Challenge is an annual competition in which schools test at the regional, sectional, and State levels, with teams of 14 members; test material is drawn from senior-level high school and freshman-level college curricula; the competition is composed of seven subjects, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Graphics, English, Mathematics, and Physics, with each student testing in two subjects; students have 40 minutes to complete the multiple-choice tests, which vary in length from 30 to 100 questions; and

WHEREAS, Twenty-eight teams and 61 individuals competed at the State championship, representing 44 high schools across Illinois; and

WHEREAS, This occasion marks the first time in the history of Gallatin County High School that a team has won a State championship; Gallatin County has been represented at the State level 15 times since 1998, when the WYSE competition was created; and

WHEREAS, The Gallatin County WYSE Team received a perfect score at the Regional Competition, hosted by Southeastern Illinois College, and placed second at the Sectional Competition, hosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale; and

WHEREAS, Individual medal winners from Gallatin County included Nathan Shults, fifth in Engineering Graphics, Kaleb Burklow, fifth in Chemistry and sixth in Mathematics, and Aaron Walters, fifth in Engineering Graphics; and

WHEREAS, The members of Gallatin County's varsity team are MaKalyn Smith, Kelsi May, Kaylee McGuire, Kaleb Burklow, Jacob Watson, Michaela Springer, Dylan Boggs, Nathan Shults, Dylan Garrison, Brody Watts, Bryon Wargel, Aaron Walters, Caitlin Lynch, and Lilly Galt; the team's coaches are Lindsay Adams and Billyjoe Menard; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the members of the Gallatin County High School WYSE Team on the occasion of their 2016 successful season and State championship victory and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Gallatin County High School WYSE Team as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
