HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize the 70th anniversary of
4Argonne National Laboratory; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Argonne's beginnings can be traced to Enrico Fermi
6and the attempt to create the world's first self-sustaining
7nuclear reaction - the Manhattan Project; because the
8experiments were deemed too dangerous to conduct in a major
9city, the operations were moved to a spot in nearby Palos Hills
10and renamed "Argonne" after the surrounding forest; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The laboratory was chartered as Argonne National
12Laboratory on July 1, 1946; at the request of the United States
13Atomic Energy Commission, it began developing nuclear reactors
14for the nation's peaceful nuclear energy program; in the late
151940s and early 1950s, the laboratory moved to a larger
16location in Lemont and established a remote location in Idaho,
17called "Argonne-West", to conduct further nuclear research;
18and
 
19    WHEREAS, Argonne's workforce consists of 3,298 employees,
201,623 scientists and engineers, 315 postdoctoral scholars, 457
21graduate and undergraduate students, 248 joint faculty, and
22over 7,186 facility users; and

1    WHEREAS, Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and
2engineering research center, where "dream teams" of
3world-class researchers work alongside experts from industry,
4academia, and other government laboratories to address vital
5national challenges in clean energy, environment, technology,
6and national security; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Argonne leverages its Chicago-area location to
8lead discovery and to power innovation in a wide range of core
9scientific capabilities, from high-energy physics, and
10materials science to structural biology and advanced computer
11science; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14recognize the 70th anniversary of Argonne National Laboratory
15and we wish it many more successful years; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Argonne National Laboratory as an expression of
18our esteem and respect.
