HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Virgil Becker on the
4occasion of his retirement as board member of the Kaskaskia
5Regional Port District; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker was born in Smithton on April 1,
71933; he has dedicated his life to public service and to his
8family, including his wife of almost 62 years, Jolene, his 4
9children, his 8 grandchildren, and his 10 great-grandchildren;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker worked as a carpenter, ran Becker's
12Corner Tavern, and founded Becker Floor Covering, which is
13still in the family today; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker served on the Smithton Village Board
15from 1965 to 1989 before serving as Mayor of Smithton from 1989
16to 2005; he rejoined the Village Board in 2007, bringing his
17time on the Village Board to 52 years; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker was appointed by Governor Jim Edgar
19to the Kaskaskia Regional Port District board in 1992,
20representing St. Clair County for 24 years as one of 15
21uncompensated board members on the board and serving as

1Assistant Treasurer; and
 
2    WHEREAS, As a member of the Kaskaskia Regional Port
3District board, Virgil Becker participated in the
4diversification of the Kaskaskia Regional Port District from
5single commodity shipping on the river to over five different
6commodities today; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker helped lead the Kaskaskia Regional
8Port District to be the 76th largest port in the country; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Virgil Becker will be retiring from his position
10as a Kaskaskia Regional Port District board member in 2016;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14thank Virgil Becker for his many years of public service and
15congratulate him on his retirement; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to Virgil Becker as an expression of our esteem and
18respect.
