HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Each year approximately 2 million women are
3assaulted by male partners and an estimated 3.3 million
4children witness domestic abuse; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Domestic abuse has been linked to a wide range of
6societal problems for people coming from violent homes
7including a majority of violent criminals and homeless people;
8a large percentage of alcoholics and drug addicts; many
9juvenile delinquents; and a majority of welfare recipients; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The DuPage County Health Department identified
11domestic abuse, and child abuse/neglect as 2 of the top 5 major
12public health problems and DuPage crime data indicates that
13domestic abuse is the county's second most prevalent offense;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service was founded in 1976 by
16DuPage families concerned about women and children made
17homeless by the violence in their lives; and
 
18    WHEREAS, During its 40-year tenure, Family Shelter Service
19has offered a safe haven for thousands of adults and children
20trapped by the violence in their homes; and

1    WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service educates communities on
2domestic abuse and how to prevent it; it operates a 24-hour
3hotline, provides shelter for those leaving abusive
4relationships, and runs a kids program to educate and counsel
5children about domestic abuse; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service counselors and case
7workers have helped countless adults and children heal from the
8devastating effects of domestic abuse and move on to productive
9lives and safer futures; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service has partnered with the
11DuPage County Judicial System to help traumatized clients
12navigate the complexities of the legal system when obtaining
13Orders of Protection and other services; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16appreciate and applaud the essential value of this organization
17and its vital contribution in creating safer communities for
18all; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That we recognize the 40th anniversary of Family
20Shelter Service in April of 2016; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2esteem and respect.
