HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of a group of African-American pilots who flew with distinction during World War II as the 332nd Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Corps; and

WHEREAS, The Tuskegee Airmen were America's first African-American military airmen; and

WHEREAS, Supporters of the Tuskegee Airmen Road Side Project in Champaign County and the Champaign County Highway Committee have approached the General Assembly to request assistance in placing signs at the Champaign County roadside entrances to document the "Activation of the Tuskegee Airmen - March 1941"; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor the service and sacrifices of the Tuskegee Airmen with the placement of commemorative memorial signs at all highway entrances to Champaign County bearing the words "Activation of the Tuskegee Airmen - March 1941"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs noting the "Activation of the Tuskegee Airmen - March 1941"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the members of the Tuskegee Airmen Roadside Project as a symbol of our recognition, respect, and esteem.
