HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is appropriate for us to remember the many
3sacrifices and contributions to the cause of freedom made by
4the outstanding men and women who served in the United States
5Armed Forces; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Major Reid Nannen, son of Mary Ann and Dale
7Nannen, was a Hopedale native; he attended Olympia High School,
8where he was a two-year captain of the swim team, section
9leader for the drum line, a member of Elite Eight baseball
10teams in 1999 and 2000, and was an Illinois State Scholar; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After graduating from Olympia, Major Nannen
12attended the University of Illinois, where he was a member of
13the NROTC battalion and participated with the Marching Illini
14Drum Line and NROTC Drill Team; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Major Nannen enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was
16commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in May 2004; he attended The
17Basic School with Delta Company class 4-04, the Naval Aviation
18Training with Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 at
19Naval Air Station Pensacola, the Naval Air Station Whiting
20Field, and Naval Air Station Meridian; he received his Wings of
21Gold in February of 2007 and was selected to fly F/A-18
22Hornets; and

1    WHEREAS, Major Nannen moved to Lemoore, California for
2fleet replacement training with Strike Fighter Squadron VF
3A-125 in May of 2007; he reported for duty with Marine Air
4Group-11 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and in June of
52008, he joined Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMF A (AW)-23 2
6and was deployed from May to December of 2010 in support of
7Operation Enduring Freedom 10.2 to Kandahar Airfield in
8Afghanistan; and
 
9    WHEREAS, While with the Red Devils, Major Nannen served as
10Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization,
11Ground Safety, Airframes, and Embark Officer, and attended
12Tactical Air Control Party training in May of 2011; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Major Nannen was then detached from the Red Devils
14and proceeded to Camp Pendleton, California for duty as a
15forward air controller with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance
16battalion; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Major Nannen again deployed to Afghanistan from
18October of 2011 to May of 2012 with 1st LAR in support of
19Operation Enduring Freedom 12.1 in the lower Helmand River
20Valley in Afghanistan, supporting every company within 1st LAR
21and conducting the first company level helicopter operations
22within the battle space; and

1    WHEREAS, Major Nannen returned to Camp Pendleton and
2subsequently detached from the battalion for refresher
3training at VMFAT-101; he was transferred to VMFA (AW)-242,
4based in Iwakuni, Japan, where he served as the Assistant
5Operations Officer; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Major Nannen's awards and decorations include the
7NATO Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Global War on
8Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National
9Defense Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Achievement Medal,
10Navy Commendation Medal, and Air Medal; and
 
11    WHEREAS, On March 1, 2014, Major Nannen, while
12participating in the elite Top Gun Pilot training school, was
13killed when the FI A-18C Hornet he was piloting during a
14training exercise crashed on the Fallen Range Training Complex,
15about 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Major Nannen left behind his parents, Dale and
17Mary Ann; his wife, Sarah, also a Military Veteran; four young
18children, Peter, Curtis, Betsy, and Isla; and his sisters,
19Briana Nannen and Bethany Miller; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE

1SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate that the section of
2Interstate 155 beginning at the Hopedale Exit on Illinois Route
3122 and ending at the intersection of Illinois Route 9 as the
4"Major Reid Nannen Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
6is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
7State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
8giving notice of the name of the "Major Reid Nannen Memorial
9Highway"; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Major Nannen, the Mayor of Hopedale,
12and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
