SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

    Amends the Department of Natural Resources Act. Provides that the State shall operate an Illinois State Museum in Springfield and at branch sites determined by the Department of Natural Resources in collaboration with local units of government and other public and private entities. Provides that the Illinois State Museum and all branch sites shall be open to the public. Provides that the Illinois State Museum shall operate a research and collections center to research, preserve, and maintain access to the extensive Illinois State Museum collections. Provides that the Department of Natural Resources and the Board of the Illinois State Museum shall solicit the assistance of the Illinois State Museum Society to fundraise non-State resources for the Museum and to provide operational assistance to the Museum. Provides that an entrance fee for visitors to the Illinois State Museum may be set by the Director of Natural Resources (rather than set by administrative rule) and that different fees may be charged for different classes of visitors. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Department of Natural Resources Act is
5amended by changing Section 20-5 and 20-15 as follows:
 
6    (20 ILCS 801/20-5)
7    Sec. 20-5. State Museum. The State shall operate an
8Illinois State Museum in Springfield and at branch sites
9determined by the Department of Natural Resources in
10collaboration with local units of government and other public
11and private entities. The Illinois State Museum and all branch
12sites shall be open to the public. The Illinois State Museum
13shall operate a research and collections center to research,
14preserve, and maintain access to the extensive Illinois State
15Museum collections. The Department of Natural Resources shall
16have within it the office of the Illinois State Museum. The
17Board of the Illinois State Museum is retained as the governing
18board for the State Museum. The Department of Natural Resources
19and the Board of the Illinois State Museum shall solicit the
20assistance of the Illinois State Museum Society to fundraise
21non-State resources for the Museum and to provide operational
22assistance to the Museum.

2    Sec. 20-15. Entrance fee. The Department may set, by the
3Director, by administrative rule an entrance fee for visitors
4to the Illinois State Museum. A different fee may be charged
5for different classes of visitors. The fee assessed by this
6Section shall be deposited into the Illinois State Museum Fund
7for the Department to use to support the Illinois State Museum.
8The monies deposited into the Illinois State Museum Fund under
9this Section shall not be subject to administrative charges or
10chargebacks unless otherwise authorized by this Act.

12    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
13becoming law.
