SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

105 ILCS 5/10-20.58 new
105 ILCS 5/34-18.50 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education, in conjunction with the Department of Public Health, to establish a calorie transparency program, to be implemented in the public schools of this State. Provides that the purpose of the program shall be to reduce obesity by educating students on healthy eating habits and the importance of being aware of the contents of the food they eat. Provides that a school board shall require each school to conspicuously display the nutritional information of all food items offered for sale to students on school property.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
52-3.167, 10-20.58, and 34-18.50 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/2-3.167 new)
7    Sec. 2-3.167. Calorie transparency program. The State
8Board of Education, in conjunction with the Department of
9Public Health, shall establish a calorie transparency program,
10to be implemented in the public schools of this State. The
11purpose of the program shall be to reduce obesity by educating
12students on healthy eating habits and the importance of being
13aware of the contents of the food they eat. The State Board of
14Education may adopt any rules necessary to administer this
15Section.

17    Sec. 10-20.58. Display of nutritional information of food
18items. A school board shall require each school to
19conspicuously display the nutritional information, including
20calorie, fat, sugar, and sodium content, of all food items
