SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Rachel G. Smylie of Oak Park, who passed
4away on April 7, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie was born on January 7, 1993 in Oak
6Park; she attended Whittier and Holmes Elementary Schools,
7Brooks Middle School, and graduated from Oak Park and River
8Forest High School in 2011; she was a junior at the University
9of Michigan at the time of her passing; and
 
10    WHEREAS, As a junior in high school, Rachel Smylie became
11interested in Africa through The Road Less Traveled, a
12Chicago-based organization that provides young people with
13opportunities for travel and work on meaningful projects in the
14United States and abroad while exposing them to new
15environments and different cultures; the following summer, she
16traveled with the program to Tanzania, where she worked with
17children who were victims of HIV/AIDS; as a student at the
18University of Michigan, she continued to learn about HIV/AIDS
19through course work and by volunteering at a local clinic; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie later returned to Africa to study at
21the University of Cape Town in South Africa and planned to
22volunteer at an HIV/AIDS clinic there; she was traveling in

1Namibia with several other students when she passed away; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Rachel sang in the Oak Park-River Forest
3Children's Chorus throughout high school, performing in
4Carnegie Hall and going on several international tours,
5including to Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Morocco; she also
6traveled on several mission trips with the Fair Oaks
7Presbyterian Church youth group and played volleyball and
8lacrosse at Oak Park and River Forest High School; at the
9University of Michigan, where she was majoring in anthropology
10and English, she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and a
11volunteer at the Washtenaw County HIV/AIDS clinic; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie was preceded in death by her
13grandparents, Melba and Connolly C. Gamble; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Rachel Smylie is survived by her parents, Sallie
15and Mark Smylie; 2 sisters, Anna Smylie and Lauren Smylie Gage
16(Patrick); 4 aunts, Cathy Smylie McGehee (Read), Beth Smylie
17Puckett (Ben), Melanie G. Walker (Robert C.), and Rev. Susan
18Rainey Dankel; an uncle, Frank Raysor; 9 cousins, Eliza
19McGehee, Jane McGehee, Bonnie Puckett (Michael Levine), Andy
20Puckett (Emily), Rebecca Puckett McWilliams, Matt McWilliams,
21Sarah Puckett, Sara Walker, and Robert Walker; and
22grandparents, Elizabeth and James Smylie; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her
3family and friends, mourn the passing of Rachel G. Smylie; and
4be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Rachel Smylie as an expression of
7our sympathy.
