HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Reverend Dr. Albert
4Sampson on the occasion of his retirement as pastor of Fernwood
5United Methodist Church in Chicago; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Reverend Sampson has been a Civil Rights activist
7for over 60 years; he was ordained by Reverend Dr. Martin
8Luther King, Jr. 57 years ago and has led the Fernwood United
9Methodist Church for 38 of those years; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Reverend Sampson is an internationally known and
11respected icon and leader renowned as one of the most
12insightful and inspirational motivators in the field today; his
13message of leadership and self-development has reached
14millions in the United States and in 72 countries around the
15world; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Reverend Sampson is a distinguished Biblical
17scholar and theological consultant for The Original African
18Heritage Study Bible; he as appeared in thousands of media
19outlets including, Esquire and Ebony magazines, the New York
20Times, the Chicago Tribune, and USA Today; his biography is
21recognized in Gale Group's Who's Who in Black America; and

1    WHEREAS, Reverend Sampson was born in Everett,
2Massachusetts, in 1938; he graduated from Everett High School
3in 1956, entered the ministry at age 19, and began preaching at
4his home church of Emmanuel Baptist in Malden, Massachusetts;
5he earned his bachelor's degree in religion and social science
6from Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and his
7master's degree in cultural studies from Governors State
8University in University Park in 1973; he earned a Master's of
9Divinity Degree in 1977 from McCormick Theological Seminary in
10Chicago and a Doctorate in Divinity from Union Baptist
11Theological Seminary in Toledo, Ohio; and
 
12    WHEREAS, A "Thank You Banquet" will be held honoring
13Reverend Sampson on July 12, 2013, at the Apostolic Church of
14God Banquet Hall in Chicago; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17we congratulate Reverend Dr. Albert Sampson on his retirement
18as pastor of Fernwood United Methodist Church and wish him the
19best in all his future endeavours; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to Reverend Sampson as an expression of our esteem
22and respect.
