HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Lieutenant Colonel
4Katherine Hayes of Joliet on the occasion of her 100th birthday
5on October 8, 2014; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes was born in 1914 on the Baltz
7family farm in Troy Township, Shorewood; she attended Cathedral
8of St. Raymond Catholic School and graduated from Joliet
9Township High School in the early 1930s; she graduated from
10Passavant Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial
11Hospital) in Chicago in 1935 and earned her Bachelor of Science
12in Nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1940; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Lt. Col.
14Hayes joined the Army as Chief Nurse of the United States Army
1512th General Hospital in February of 1942; her experiences
16included combat service from 1942 to 1945 in North Africa and
17Italy, during which time she earned 5 battle stars; Chief
18Nurse, Ashford General Army Hospital at White Sulphur Springs,
19West Virginia from 1945 to 1946; Deputy Chief, Nursing
20Division, Office of the Surgeon General from 1946 to 1950;
21Chief Nurse, Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C.
22from 1951 to 1954; Chief Nurse, Landstuhl Medical Center,
23Germany from 1954 to 1957; Chief Nursing Service at Fort George

1G. Meade, Maryland in 1957; and Chief Nurse, Nurse Management
2Office and Nurse Instructor at the US Army Hospital, Fort Ord,
3California from 1957 to 1961; she retired from the Army Nurses
4Corp in 1962; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes's contributions to health care and
6the nursing industry led to such advancements as separate
7pediatric and female wards, centralized immunizations and
8injection treatment clinics, modern intensive care units, and
9the publication of professional and technical manuals related
10to nursing resulting in increased efficiencies and reduced
11costs; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1985, Lt. Col. Hayes was a generous benefactor
13towards establishing the Army Medical Department Museum to
14ensure the history and reputation of the Army Medical
15Department for future generations; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes was selected as a member of the
17esteemed Order of Military Medical Merit - Medal #357; the
18award recognizes United States Army medical personnel who have
19demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral
20character, and who have made significant contributions to the
21Army Medical Department Center; only 357 individuals have been
22recognized to receive this award; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Katherine Hayes on her 100th
4birthday, thank her for her service to her country, and wish
5many more wonderful years; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Lt. Col. Hayes as an expression of our esteem and
8respect.
