HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the
3members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened
4to learn of the death of Otis McDonald of Chicago, who passed
5away on April 4, 2014; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Otis McDonald was born in Louisiana in 1933; he
7settled in Chicago in 1952 after serving in the United States
8Army; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Otis McDonald worked as a janitor for the
10University of Chicago and worked his way up to maintenance
11engineer; while working at the U. of C., he earned an associate
12degree from Kennedy-King College; he retired in 1996; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Otis McDonald was the lead plaintiff in the
14lawsuit that prompted the landmark United States Supreme Court
15decision that struck down Chicago's 28-year ban on handguns;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Otis McDonald felt strongly that he had a duty to
18stand up for the rights that had been taken away from
19African-Americans during slavery, including the right to bear
20arms; and

1    WHEREAS, Otis McDonald is survived by is wife, Laura, and
2by 4 grown children; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we mourn the passing of Otis McDonald, and extend our sincere
6condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
7him; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Otis McDonald as an expression of
10our deepest sympathy.
