SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/34-18.49 new

    Amends the Chicago School District Article of the School Code. Requires the Chicago Board of Education to approve a change to the name of a school building if a petition is filed with the board requesting a change to the school building's name and the petition is signed by at least 5,000 members of the community in which the building is located. Provides that if the board has approved a change to the name of a school building after January 1, 2013 and before September 1, 2013, then the board shall rescind that approval and the original name of the school building must be restored. Effective June 1, 2014.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
534-18.49 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/34-18.49 new)
7    Sec. 34-18.49. School building name change. The board shall
8approve a change to the name of a school building if a petition
9is filed with the board requesting a change to the school
10building's name and the petition is signed by at least 5,000
11members of the community in which the building is located. If
12the board has approved a change to the name of a school
13building after January 1, 2013 and before September 1, 2013,
14then the board shall rescind that approval and the original
15name of the school building must be restored.
 
16    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect June 1,
172014.
