SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, There have been 113 homicides in Chicago in 2010,
3 with 16 of those victims being children; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Over the past 2 years, nearly 1,000 Chicagoans
5 were murdered, including 129 youths under the age of 18; and
 
6     WHEREAS, 369 Illinoisans under the age of 25 were killed by
7 firearms in 2006 alone; and
 
8     WHEREAS, 16-year-old Reggies Washington was just blocks
9 from his home when he was struck by a bullet around 7:30 P.M.
10 on April 2, 2010; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Police found the Chicago high school student in
12 the middle of the street with a gunshot wound in his back; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Reggies died approximately one hour later from his
14 injuries; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Blake Munie, age 19, was in his car on April 9,
16 2010 when another teen approached the vehicle and opened fire;
17 and
 
18     WHEREAS, Blake was able to drive away from the scene with a

1 gunshot wound to the chest, only to hit a utility pole blocks
2 away; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Blake later died at the hospital from his
4 injuries; and
 
5     WHEREAS, A 17-year-old Lakeland High School student named
6 Michael Lee was at a party in January of 2010 when a fight
7 spilled out onto the street; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Lee, an honor student and football player at his
9 high school, was shot and killed during the altercation; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are committed
11 to protecting children from gun violence; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
13 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we raise awareness of
14 gun violence amongst our youth by designating the date of May
15 10, 2010 as "Protecting Young People from Gun Violence"
16 Awareness Day; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
18 presented to the Washington, Munie, and Lee families as an
19 expression of our sympathy.
