SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Michael G. Lord of Pittsfield, who passed away on February 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord was born on October 2, 1952, in Oceanside, California; he was the son of Vernon L. and Jean S. Langdon Lord; he married Phyllis Pearson on October 6, 1973, at the First Baptist Church in Pittsfield; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1970; after graduation, he joined the United States Navy, serving with the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard from 1970 to 1974; during his tenure with the Ceremonial Guard, Mike demonstrated superior close-order rifle skills and was assigned to the Silent Drill Team, performing spectacular exhibitions throughout the Washington, D.C. region; and

WHEREAS, After his time in the military, Michael Lord returned to his hometown of Pittsfield, where he served as a deacon and taught the junior high Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church of Pittsfield; he then began his career with the Pittsfield City Police Department, where he later served as a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Charlie Cheek; he was also elected to serve as Pike County Sheriff and Pike County Coroner from December of 1986 to November of 1998; from December of 1998 until April of 2007, he served on the Pike County Board; on March 4, 2002, he joined the Illinois Secretary of State Police as an investigator; he was employed by the Illinois Secretary of State Police at the time of his passing; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord was a member of the Pittsfield American Legion Post 152, the Pittsfield Fire Department, the Illinois Sheriff's Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Pike County Democratic Party; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord enjoyed spending time with his family and co-workers, the outdoors, golfing, and his black Labrador retriever, Molly; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord was preceded in death by his father, Vernon; and

WHEREAS, Michael Lord is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his daughter, Sarah Anne Lord; his son, Micah Lord; his mother, Jean Lord; his brother, Mark Lord; his nephews and niece, Doug and Brock Lord, Dean Pearson, and Carrie Bradshaw; his many cousins; and his mother and father in-law, Russell and Phyla Pearson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Michael G. Lord; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Michael Lord as an expression of our sympathy.
