SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Unused and unwanted consumer pharmaceuticals have
3 a negative impact on public health and the environment; the
4 lack of effective and efficient methods of drug disposal has
5 resulted in unwelcome social, cultural, ecological, and global
6 effects; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The theft and social use, misuse, and abuse of
8 pharmaceuticals by teenagers, adults, and older adults has
9 increased; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Increasing polypharmacy, non-adherence to
11 prescriptions, and medication errors all contribute to
12 accumulation of drugs and poor patient outcomes; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Potential deleterious effects on wildlife and
14 humans due to drug disposition in surface and ground waters are
15 a result of improper disposal; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Unused medications represent wasted health care
17 dollars to consumers, insurance carriers, and taxpayers alike;
18 therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
20 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the date

1 of May 1, 2010 as "Proper Drug Disposal Day" throughout the
2 State of Illinois and urge all citizens to recognize the need
3 for proper adherence to medication and appropriate drug
4 disposal across the State of Illinois.
