SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Frederick A. Dolan II of Normal, who passed away on October 29, 2009; and

WHEREAS, He was born February 7, 1924, in New York New York, the son of Frederick A. and Marjorie Bruen Dolan; he married Jacqueline S. Vlaskamp on May 24, 1947, in Dayton, Ohio; he graduated from Bloomington High School in 1941; he then attended and graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in printing technology and met his then wife-to-be, Jackie; and

WHEREAS, He served during World War II with the 101st Infantry, 26th Division in the European Theater from October 1944 to April 1945; he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart with oak leaf clusters during his service; his work career began when he returned to Bloomington in 1947 to join the family business, Pantagraph Printing & Stationary Company; he assumed its leadership following the death of his father in 1960 and was the third generation of his family to work at the Pantagraph, retiring in 2005 after 58 years of service; and

WHEREAS, He was involved in numerous civic and charitable activities throughout his life; major associations included the YMCA, the United Way of McLean County (as well as its predecessor, the United Fund), and the local Unitarian/Universalist Church, where he also led the fundraising drive to construct the building the church presently occupies; his last major and ongoing endeavor was with the McLean County Historical Society and the development of the Museum of History, serving as president of the Society for three terms and spearheading the successful fund drive to secure the former county courthouse as the permanent site for the museum; and

WHEREAS, He was a member of Wade Barney Lodge No. 512 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Bloomington, where he had served as commander in chief of the Bloomington Consistory; he was awarded the honorary 33 degree, the highest degree in Masonry, in 1968; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; an infant son; and his beloved sister, Jessie Behr; and

WHEREAS, Frederick Dolan is survived by his two sons, Michael (Carole) and Fred III (Gay); his grandchildren, Nicholas (Jennifer) Dolan and Gretchen Chesley; and his close friend, travel companion, and brother-in-law, Carl Behr; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Frederick Dolan; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Frederick Dolan as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
