SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of John Mendenhall Sr. of Godfrey, who passed away on November 16, 2009; and

WHEREAS, John Howard Mendenhall Sr. was born on October 27, 1918, in Chicago Heights, the son of John Franklin and Ethel (Evans) Mendenhall; he married the former Alice L. Reid on June 20, 1942, in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, He received a B.S. in metallurgical engineering from the University of Illinois; he was employed at Olin Brass as a metallurgical engineer for more than 40 years, as a brass alloys expert, retiring in 1985; and

WHEREAS, He was a member of the Community Congregational UCC in Godfrey for many years and then transferred membership to the Evangelical UCC in Godfrey, where he sang with his wife in the choir; he was a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), which he joined in 1961 and became a fellow in their society; he loved to golf, was an avid reader, worked as a volunteer at the Crisis Food Center for 20 years, and was a loyal Chicago White Sox fan; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Thomas John Mendenhall; and

WHEREAS, John Mendenhall Sr. is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jack Wepler; his sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Stephanie Mendenhall and John and Susan Mendenhall; his grandchildren, Travis and Todd Zimmerman, Jeremy Wepler, Jessica and Christopher Mendenhall, and Jacob and Alex Levering; his great-grandson, Tristan Zimmerman; and his sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Peebles and Gladys and Robert Tuggle; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of John Mendenhall Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John Mendenhall Sr. as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
