SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mary Vambaketes of Alton, who passed away on October 19, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Mary Vambaketes was born on May 3, 1930, in Andros, Greece; she was the daughter of John and Irene (Genisis) Lafakis; she married John George Vambaketes on September 28, 1947, in Alton; and

WHEREAS, Mary Vambaketes was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Swansea, where she was very active with the Philoptochos Society, a ladies organization that performs philanthropic work for children, the elderly, and the church; she also baked every Tuesday at the church for fund-raising activities; and

WHEREAS, Mary Vambaketes was a past president of the PTA; and

WHEREAS, Mary Vambaketes was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brother, Louis Lafakis; and

WHEREAS, Mary Vambaketes is survived by her daughter, Stella Georgitsis and her husband, Ted; her son, Tony Vambaketes and his wife, Peggy; her grandchildren, Mary, A.J., and John M. Vambaketes, Marianna Georgitsis, and Peter John Georgitsis and his wife, Katie; her great-grandchildren, Teddy and Ellianna Georgitsis, and Stella Mathews; her brothers, James Lafakis and Gregory Lafakis; and her sisters, Billie Yiannakakis, Angie Kefalas, and Catherine Skordos; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Mary Vambaketes; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary Vambaketes as an expression of our sympathy.
