SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Alec E. Catherwood of Byron, who passed away on October 14, 2010 in Helmand province, Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood graduated from Byron High School in 2009; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood served his country with bravery and distinction as a rifleman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton, California; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood earned the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Korean Defense Service Medal for his service; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood was a member of the Boy Scouts; he was a black belt in tae kwon do; he also enjoyed athletics, four-wheeling, mudding in his truck, and shooting his shotgun; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood is survived by his parents, Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood; his fiancee, Hailey Patrick; his sister, Mikaela Montgomery; and his maternal grandparents, Donald and Mary Ernst; and

WHEREAS, LCpl. Alec Catherwood's patriotism and courage will be remembered fondly by his loving family, his fellow soldiers, and the citizens of our grateful nation; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Lance Corporal Alec E. Catherwood; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of LCpl. Alec Catherwood as an expression of our sympathy.
