SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Patricia Hoglund-Michaels, who passed
4away on October 28, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels lived in Riverside
6since childhood; she attended Central School, Riverside Junior
7High School, and was a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield
8High School, where she served as Student Council President
9during her senior year; she subsequently attending the National
10College of Education in Evanston, where she earned her degree
11in education in 1942; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels taught second grade in
13Oak Park for several years; in 1944, she married John Hoglund,
14a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School whom she
15had known since junior high school; together, they raised 3
16children in Riverside, Anne, Steven, and Mark; John Hoglund
17passed away in 1983, 3 months before their 40th wedding
18anniversary; in 1984, she married Earl Michaels ("Mike"), also
19a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School; Mike
20passed away in 1996; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was prominent in local,
22county, and statewide Republican Party activities during the

11960s and 1970s; in the early 1960s, she was instrumental in
2establishing Riverside's Republican Headquarters in order to
3publicize and promote Republican candidates for offices at all
4levels of government; from 1964 to 1974, she served as
5Riverside Township's Republican Committeewoman, where she
6worked with the Township Committeeman to organize local
7Republican programs and activities and worked with fellow
8Committeewomen from other communities in Cook County; in 1968,
9she was appointed to serve as Vice Chairwoman of the Women's
10Division of the Republican Central Committee; in 1972, she
11became Chairwoman of the Women's Division; in 1974, she was
12elected to be Riverside Township Republican Committeeman,
13where she served until 1982; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was a member of the
15Riverside Garden Club for many years; she was active in
16Riverside Infant Welfare, the Fortnightly Club, and the
17Riverside Lions Club; from 1993 to 2005, she derived particular
18pleasure from serving as a volunteer in the library at Blythe
19Park School in Riverside, where she read stories to 1st, 2nd,
20and 3rd grade children; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels was well known among
22her peers for her considerable artistic talents; during the
231960s, her medium was oil painting; in the 1970s, she
24completely re-decorated the dollhouse that her daughter had

1outgrown and created a number of shadow box displays for her
2family and friends; she recently created drawings and paintings
3with colored pencils and watercolors; she still attended weekly
4oil painting classes in Riverside at the time of her passing;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Patricia Hoglund-Michaels is survived by her
7children, Steven, Anne (Berardo) DeSimone, and Mark; her
8grandsons, Jared Hoglund, Aaron Hoglund, and Todd (Anne Marie)
9DeSimone; her nephew, Robert Price; and the many friends and
10acquaintances she made during her years in Riverside;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
14her family and friends, the passing of Patricia
15Hoglund-Michaels; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Patricia Hoglund-Michaels as an
18expression of our sympathy.
