SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly are
3saddened to learn of the death of Bishop Arthur Brazier, who
4passed away on October 22, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a civil rights activist
6and community leader known throughout the world for his great
7compassion and his unwavering devotion to God; he served as
8pastor of the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago for 48 years
9up until his retirement in 2008; he continued to serve as
10pastor emeritus until his passing; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a central figure in
12driving out gang violence in his community; he helped lead the
13fight for affordable housing and revitalizing his community; he
14also marched alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to protest
15segregation and was responsible for bringing Dr. Martin Luther
16King, Jr., to Chicago in 1964; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a member of the Public
18Buildings Commission of Chicago; he also served as a lecturer
19at several leading universities, including the University of
20Chicago, Northwestern University, Harvard University, and
21Antioch College; and

1    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was the founder of the
2Woodlawn Organization, the Woodlawn Preservation and
3Investment Corporation, and the Fund for Community
4Redevelopment and Revitalization; he was also a national leader
5in community development; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was the author of "Black
7Self-Determination", "Saved by Grace and Grace Alone", and
8"Delivery Systems for Model Cities"; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier is survived by his wife,
10Isabelle; his son, Dr. Byron T. Brazier; his daughters, Lola
11Hillman, Janice Dortch, and Rosalyn Shepherd; and his 7
12grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
15CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn, along with his family and
16friends, the passing of Bishop Arthur Brazier; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Bishop Arthur Brazier as an
20expression of our sympathy.
